Information and
Resources for Helping Young Children Cope with and Resolve Fears in the
Face of Disaster
Traumatic events, natural disasters and war--whether worldwide, national,
local or personal to our families--can be unsettling for us all. It can be
especially difficult for babies, toddlers and young children, who may not
be able to understand all the details, but still see the distress of those
around them.
The links below offer informational resources for adults to help young
children cope with natural disasters and other tragedies. If you prefer to
choose only one resource, consider "LITTLE LISTENERS IN AN UNCERTAIN
WORLD" from Zero to Three as described below. THIS INFORMATION IS ALSO
AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE
www.migreatparent.org (Parenting, Resources and Health)
ZERO TO THREE has developed several informational resources for adults to
help young children cope with natural disasters and other tragedies.
Materials include a free, reproducible handout to help families and their
children cope in the face of disaster ("Little Listeners); a booklet
addressing the special concerns of military families and links to other
resources and additional publications for early childhood professionals on
helping children cope with trauma and violence. The materials from ZERO TO
THREE are available at:
http://www.zerotothree.org/coping/
NAEYC and Voices for America’s Children have also developed pages with
information and resources for working with children in the aftermath of a
disaster.
