Happy, Happy Spring! While I enjoy and appreciate every season, the dawn of
Spring always makes me happy and renews my energy for life. I hope you enjoy the
same.
The year 2001 is the International Year of Volunteers and April 22-28 is
National Volunteer Week. Since it's true that hope springs
eternal, then it is also true that volunteers spring eternal hope. Imagine how
difficult people's lives would be without volunteers, and then thank those volunteers who
touch your life every day. On behalf of all our staff let me extend a million thanks
to all of our volunteers - you are truly signs of hope.
May is National Older Americans' Month. The theme for 2001, The
Many Faces of Aging, celebrates the tremendous diversity at the local, national and
global levels. We salute you. We honor you. We value you and your
contributions to family and community.
Also, mark your calendars for June 27, 2001. That's the date of the 18th
Annual Older American Festival. It will truly be "A Day at the
Zoo!" Details will follow in the next newsletter.
Please take a moment to look at and complete the survey found on page 1.
We are interested in what you think about the Counseling, Legal Assistance and
Resource Advocacy programs that are offered by the Department of Senior Citizen Services.
We want to give you the best service possible and we are anxious to hear your
comments.
There is some exciting news coming in April for those individuals living
with or caring for older adults with chronic illness or Alzheimer's Disease.
Beginning April 23, a six-part program called "Caregiver College" will be
offered at Macomb Community College. Sessions will run on Monday evenings from 6:30
- 8:15 p.m. This wonderful opportunity is coming to Macomb County as a result of a
collaborative effort of the Dementia Services Committee of Macomb County, Macomb County
Senior Citizen Services, the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, Wayne State University
and Macomb Community College. Topics include such issues as "Emotional Issues
in Caregiving," "Resources for the Family, "Managing Difficult
Behaviors," just to name a few. Please call me at 810-469-7387 for more
information about this worthwhile free series.
Sincerely,
Kathryn E. Dodge, Director
