COMPULSIVE GAMBLING SURVEY

The Michigan Department of Community Health published the results of a 1999 statewide survey in the year 2000 which was conducted by Western Michigan University's Evaluation Center.  This survey indicated that 4.9% of Michigan adults were "lifelong" compulsive gamblers.

Problem and pathological, also called compulsive and addictive, gamblers are distinct from recreational gamblers:   They cannot control their impulse to gamble and often bring ruin on themselves and their families.  They often lose their jobs, their savings, their relationships and their dignity.  To assist people with this problem, the Michigan Community Mental Health Department has developed a Problem Gambling Helpline - 1-800-270-7117.  Help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  All calls are answered by an individual, not screened by voicemail or answering machines.  Through this helpline, compulsive gamblers receive consultations and treatment recommendations.  Treatment is also available for family members of compulsive gamblers.

Macomb County Community Services Agency (MCCSA)

MCCSA's Home Injury Control program has received some grant funding for minor adaptations to home environments to prevent or control injuries in the home.  This is a one-time service available to handicapped and frail Macomb County residents, age 60 and over.  Service is targeted to those seniors who can not afford to purchase the safety devices and who do not qualify under other funding programs.   Typical safety equipment includes tub grab bars, tub chairs, and handrails.   Contact the MCCSA Chore Office at 810-469-5012.

MCCSA's Senior Nutrition Program needs volunteer drivers to deliver meals to homebound seniors within their community.  Delivery takes approximately 1 hour, 2 times per month.  Mileage reimbursement is offered.   Please call 810-469-5228 for more information.
