Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.)

There are 152 records in the Memorial Book. Most contain at least the name, date of death, place of burial, and regiment. Some contain the date and place of birth, and a few contain a brief war record in the veteran's own words.

A photocopy of the memorial book may be viewed at Mount Clemens Public Library. The original is too fragile for handling.

The Mount Clemens post was organized in January, 1884, and was named for General Henry D. Terry, commander of the 5th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. The post was officially disbanded and its colors sent to Lansing in 1925 when only a dozen men were left to answer the roll. The remaining men continued to meet unofficially and to conduct Memorial Day services as long as they were able. The last surviving member and last post commander was Gilbert LaCroix, who died in 1938 at the age of 92.
