Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka

In the author’s first novel, two sisters react to their father’s mid-life crisis, a Ukrainian war refugee now living in a city north of London, and his decision to marry a much-younger, buxom blonde woman that he met at the local Ukrainian social club. The novel’s initial comic tone turns more serious as the sisters discover their family’s past and come to terms with their sometimes distant relationship.

Join us for an interesting discussion of Lewycka’s book and tempting desserts.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 27.

Contrary to popular belief, we have not been celebrating Thanksgiving since the original feast in 1621.  In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of thanks and may have done so to remind us of the landing of the Mayflower.  President Franklin Roosevelt made the decision to celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November in 1939.  Find out more about the history of this national holiday and get help with roasting and serving Tom Turkey:
