A History of Troy Public Library

2007
  • Special Needs Collection established through a gift of the Friends of TPL

The 1st collection of its kind in a Michigan public library, the Special Needs Collection offers unique books, toys, games & software to help children with special needs and their parents.

  • Online Program Registration becomes available

  • High-Speed Wireless Internet access available throughout the Library

  • Library of Michigan awards Citation of Excellence to Troy Public Library

  • Troy Public Library is #1in Michigan among libraries serving populations of 50,000 or greater per Hennen's American Public Library Rating Index.  The Index compares funding level, staffing, collections, patron visits, materials circulated & reference questions asked.

  • Teen Resource Center created

  • Annual Circulation exceeds 1,000,000

  • Library renovation to improve effective space usage and climate control in the Library

  • Free Internet access via Netscape becomes  available to TPL patrons

  • Dedication and open house of expanded Library at 510 West Big Beaver Road

  • Library expansion begins. 46,000 cardholders; 552,083 items circulated in 1983

  • Troy Public Library opened in Civic Center Complex at 510 West Big Beaver Road
1968
  • Troy City Commission voted to fund construction of a permanent library via  30-year bonds
1967
  • Library moved to 5044 Rochester Road at Long Lake Road
1965
  • Library moved to 61 East Square Lake Road at Livernois Road
1963
  • City Charter amendment created the Library Board of  Trustees
1962
  • Troy Library Reading Room (1,000 books, non-circulating) opened in Troy High School at 3179 Livernois Road
1962
  • Troy Board of Education offered two rooms in Troy High School for a public library
  • Friends of the Library collected used books that formed the nucleus of the collection
  • Big Beaver United Methodist Church donated their library collection
1959
  • Troy City Commission created a Library Commission.
